MD3000i - Loss of Path Redundancy

$

Hi,

we bought a used MD3000i and exchanged the disks inside with new disks, initialized the RAID 6 and finished the setup without problems.

Now, that we mounted the iSCSI disk and started formatting it, a lot of errors pop up in the MDSM, as are:

- Expansion Enclosure - Loss of Path Redundancy

- Individual Physical Disk - Degraded Path  (one message per disk)

- Degraded Physical Disk Channel

As it seems, Controller 1 is the trouble maker - but I'm not sure about it. The steps from Recovery Guru don't help. So my questions now are:

- How to proceed, as there is no support any longer on the storage?

- Can the MD3000i be degraded to a 1-controller-setup?

Thanks for any help,

Ralf

Hi,

I have a NX3200 where I need to add memory and disk drives plus update drivers. Questions:

1. Where can I download a guide for the nx3200 motherboard?

2. Where can I download a complete driver package for the nx3200 for updating Win2012 drivers?

MD1000: Switching drives

I currently have a PowerVault MD 1000 with several virtual disks. One disk was slots 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 in a RAID 5 configuration. 9 was assigned as a hot spare. Disk 3 failed and 9 took over but after replacing 3 I want to get the disks back in order. Slot 3 is now the hot spare. All disks are the same size with identical product numbers from Dell.

Is there a simple way to get 9 back in the group and remove 3? Is it as simple as pulling out disk 9 to simulate a failure and it would rebuild on 3 or is there a safer way to do it?

Hi,

we have a new MD1200 with 12 new 2TB HDDs.

Do we really have to power down our working MD3420 to connect the additional Shelf ?

Or can we connect it online, as it is new and unconfigured ?

Hello, I hope this is the correct forum. I have a Dell PowerEdge T610 server with an internal IBM ULTRIUM-HH3 SCSI tape drive. After ejecting the tape the door will not close and the top LED light is solid green and the LED below is flashing rapidly green. I cannot find documentation on what this means. Can someone provide some insight on this issue.

Thank you

Replacing hard drive on MD1200

Hi, we have a predictive failure on one of the drives on a MD1200 and I have a replacement drive from Dell. I am able to see the failure predicted in the Dell OMSA on the server. Are the drives hot swappable or do I need to take the drive offline to replace the drive? Also are there any other tools to monitor the MD1200 besides OMSA?

Thanks

Procedures to upgrade MD3000i Harddrives

I inherited an MD3000i with 146GBdrives.  I have the correct 'Dell-Certified' replacement drives and have downloaded the latest disk firmware upgrade.  What are the exact steps to upgrade?  I slapped the new drives and tried to install the firmware but no disks were available to upgrade.  Do I need to keep a couple 146gbs and upgrade in phases, or am I doing something wrong?

We replaced a failed disk and after the successful rebuild we began to receive the "Individual Physical Disk - Degraded Path" error in Recovery Guru. All of our disks are online and our status is healthy otherwise. Can you advise what might be the issue?

PV220S upgrade connected servers

I currently have 2 Dell PE2850's running W2K3 Ent, one of which is attached to the PV220S.  I am upgrading the 2850's to W2K8R2 and need to understand what the PV220S is capable of.

Firstly, can I connect two servers to the PV220S simultaneously (there are two SCSI ports) and both 2850's have SCSI adapters installed?

Secondly, if not I'll upgrade the one server then move the connection to the PV220S over so I can upgrade the other server.  Is this possible?

Apologies if my questions lack detail but I don't know much about the PV220S and NAS connectivity, more used to iSCSI SAN but we need to re-use the PV220S at this site.

Virtual device failed MD 1000

Hi

We have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 server running over 2 powerVault 1000MD storage, we discovered a beep alarm coming from the server and could identify one of the physical disks as defective. We tried to re-mount the disk with no use. we looked in the market for a replacement disk and could find one with higher RPM (15K) and different manufacturer "Dell", while the original one is "Maxtor" 10K RPM.

After mounting the new disk the virtual disk failed, we tried to import the foreign configuration using the administration utility with no use, we also tried to shutdown the server, turn storage off and on, startup the server with no use. we tried to remove the defective disk completely with same result: " Virtual disk failed: Virtual Disk 3 (Vol5) Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)"

we need to fix the situation without losing the data

Any ideas are mostly welcome, below are the alert log sorted in descending chronological order:

Virtual disk failed:  Virtual Disk 3 (Vol5) Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)

A foreign configuration has been detected.:  Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)

MD 3000 Virtual Disk Failed

Hello,

we have MD3000 attached to a dell poweredge server which host our mail archival solution. looks like the drives are failed on the drive and virtual drive is in failed state. Recovery guru initially showed 2 disk failure but we powered off the server & storage and reinserted those drives. now Recovery guru shows only one affected physical disk but when i got to physical disk tab in MD manager it shows one disk as failed and the other "needs attention". the powervault is out of warranty and unable to renew the warranty as it is EOL. is there a way i can retrieve the data if we replace both disks. i have seen couple of posts mentioning about using the revive command but i am unsure whether it will destroy the data.

can someone please help.

MD3000i Controller Not Communicating

$

Hi,

The battery on one controller of our MD3000i showed up as failed recently, so I got a new one from Dell and last night, our data centre engineer installed it. The SAN has twin controllers and all the hosts are multi-path, so I simply set controller 0 offline to let the engineer do the job.

Since the controller has come back online however, it refuses to accept its preferred virtual disks back. I'm unable to ping the iSCSI interfaces from the host and although the management interface of the controller responds to a ping, SMCLI fails to connect with the message "Network errors were detected while connecting to storage array 10.x.x.x".

If I try to manually move a virtual disk back to the controller, it fails with this message:

Return code: Error 1007 - Could not communicate with the RAID controller module in slot 0 to complete this request

It appears that leaving the controller online in this state is slowing down access to the SAN from the hosts, so I'm having to leave it offline at the moment.

I'm thinking that I may have to power cycle the thing in order to get it to play ball but I'm a bit worried that it won't come back at all!

Any suggestions please?

ML6000 not detected in Windows Server 2012

Hi,

Our ML6000 is not being detected by a new Windows Server 2012 host. It is not found in device manager. However, the 3 SAS LTO 5 drives in it are detected properly.

It used to be connected solely to a Windows 2003 R2 Server and is detected without issues. While connected to the 2003 Server, it originally had 3 SCSI LTO 3 drives.

For testing and comparison, we placed ALL 6 drives back into the library and connected the 3 SCSI to the 2003 R2 Server and the 3 SAS drives to the 2012 Server.

Still, the Library is not detected on the 2012. It is detected by the 2003 machine. Both hosts can access the GUI console of the library.

The only difference I can think of between the 2 servers is that the 2012 server does not have a SCSI card, so there are no SCSI cables going into it. But I would assume the SCSI connections are just for detecting the drives and not the library itself

What did we miss? What type of connection should the library have to the 2012 server to have it detected in device manager?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

Please advice if MD3620F or MD3820F support TRIM/UNMAP functionality for SSD drives, as this not covered in manuals.

Thanks,

Replacing failed disk in md1200

$

Hi

I have a failed disk in my md1200. It was part of a redundant virtual disk (raid5) with a hotspare. The virtual disk has been rebuilt with the hotspare and is showing status green. The failed disk is blinking amber in the md1200. There are no options to take the disk offline in OpenManage 7.4, just blink/unblink the drive. I am expecting a replacement disk tomorrow. The manual gives me two steps to replacing a disk in the above scenario, the first is:

1. Remove the failed disk. (!)

Can I simply press the release button and pull the drive out whilst the leds are blinking amber? Or do I need to do something else? The cli utility details a command to prepare a drive for removal, but gives no further explanation . . .

Any pointers would be helpful

Thanks
