upgrade MD3220i

We recently purchased an MD3220i SAN for use with our ERP system however we've found we're not getting the performance we need (Using SQLIO random write test we're getting about 2100 IOPS and 130mb/s. We're also getting fairly high latency between 5ms and 8ms)

Is it possible to upgrade this device to use another connection method such as 10GB iSCSI, FC or Direct SAS to the host or would that require a new enclosure?

RAID Battery replacement on MD3200 Disc Shelves

Hello there

I have 2 disc shelves, MD3200. I have been advised by Dell that I need to replace the RAID batteries on both units.

I wondered if anyone has ever done this or are there any Dell instructions on how to go about it.

Each disc shelf only has one RAID card in each unit as one acts as a mirror of the other via the SAN software, but I am particularly concerned about knowing that the information in the cache has been written to the discs before the units are turned off while I replace the batteries.

Any thoughts or experiences anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

MD 3220 as Storage

hi everyone! Is MD 3220 & MD 1220 can be used only as an expansion of NX3200? or can be connected also directly to server? SAS port is the only way to connect it or USB port is okay also?

Change Raid level from 10 to 6, and back again

On a Powervault MD3200i I need to temporary change one of the disk pool raid from 10 to 6, then in a few weeks after I have added some disks put it back to raid 10.

a few questions:

- I assume this is supported? the document looks like it is

- What sort of time will it take to change on a 3tb disk poll?

- The disks I am adding back will be 278GB disks and the pool in questions currently has 558gb disks, I assume a mix of disk sizes is OK?

Thanks

PERC4e/DC performance issue on RHEL 5.x

We have two PE R900, equipped with PERC 4e/DC (SCSI U320) and PERC 6/i (SAS).  The SAS PERC 6/i works nicely, while the SCSI array PERC 4e/DC works poorly.

The PERC 4e/DC is connected to a PowerValut 220S unit with 14 Seagate ST3300007LC drives, there are two RAID5 volumes with 7 drives each.  These RAID volumes were made into two ext3 file system on the server.  Whenever I write large files (e.g. a 10 GB file) to the PERC 4e/DC volumes, it would finish writing fairly quickly ( 90 MB/s), however, the RAID volume would still busy for about 15 minutes afterwards, iowait for the volume would be at about 9% and system load stays high until the iowait goes down below 1%.  If I copy more files (using rsync for example), the whole system would be unresponsive for a long time due to high iowait for the volume.  Currently, the PERC 4e/DC uses Write-back caching mode.

Does anyone have any suggestion to tune this RAID system so that it would lock up the WHOLE system while there is a lot of writing activities to the SCSI RAID volume.  I don't have trouble with the SAS RAID at all.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

MD3420 SAS Connection to two R720 Servers (2008 R2)

Hello,

I was looking for some suggestions trying to my two servers to both see a MD3420 Array as shared storage.  The overview idea is here:  http://i.imgur.com/UeWyLvg.jpg

Initial setup was very easy.  I installed the Dell MD Storage software.  MPIO is installed, as is Storage Manager for SANs.  I was able to put a management IP address on the array, connect to it and create a disk group.    After that I was able to see both host's port identifier numbers and did the host mapping which seemed correct.  Once I did this I was expecting to the unformatted partition in Disk Management in Windows.  I'm not sure where to go from here.   I've upgraded firmware on the array, which went fine.  I've looked in the Storage Manager for SANs and it sees the LUN (though it says uknown number.)  Any help is appreciated.

Additional Info:

OS: Windows 2008 R2 Standard

We replaced a failed disk and after the successful rebuild we began to receive the "Individual Physical Disk - Degraded Path" error in Recovery Guru. All of our disks are online and our status is healthy otherwise. Can you advise what might be the issue?

dell poweredge 6850 with powervault 220s and md1000 on perc 4/dc

Server crashed over weekend. Tried to reboot and it said the perc 4/dc standard controller w/128M memory battery was missing, so I rebooted again.

Found the battery the second time. PERC 4/dc is in slot 2 connected to a powervault 220s with 14 146G drives and the 4 internal drives.

After I rebooted again it said following scsi id not responding channel 1:9,10,11,12,13,14,15 2 logical drives found, 2 logical drives failed.

If I CTRL-M and go into view/add config all drives show failed, objects sees the logical drives offline.

If I try to rebuild a drive it just says error. All drive lights are green and blink with activity when server is booting.

A PERC/6e is in slot4 and it is fine and a PERC 5/e is in slot 1 and it is fine.

Tried clearing config and then got the drive/nvram config mismatch error.

Have another server just like this one but didn't want to change parts if I am going to lose my drive data and configuration.

If I move the PERC/5e and PERC/6e controllers and drive arrays (MD1000) to another server do I lose their configuration and data? I only have spare PERC 4/dc cards not PERC/5e or 6e.

I have a new PERC card on order since I don't think it would be 19 drives that were bad and if they were I would get yellow or red lights?

How do I fix this so I don't lose the data? it takes days to recover from tape...

Most errors deal with using the RMU to move a tape out of the drive so a cleaning tape could be used or move a tape before a firmware upgrade.  During the firmware upgrade the system was power cycled many times.

PowerVault 745N NAS array failure

Walked in today and my 745N had an audible alarm.  I connected to the box and checked array manager and it showed drive 1 had failed so I replaced that drive and slid it back into the case. Beep went off and array manager said "rebuilding".  I left and an hour later the alarm was on again and the system had evidently rebooted and was sitting at "No boot device available".  The array is listed and shows no Smart errors but lists Array 1 as Failed and Array 2 as rebuilding.  Drives look like their rebuilding just from the activity lights.  System isn't under warranty any longer but was hoping to figure out how to get it back up and working.

I have an MD1000 that had a disk fail, and the hot-spare has a failure predicted. My RAID5 is off-line at the moment.

Is it possible to force the failure predicted drive to go online until I can replace the failed drive(s)?

Dr4100, TL2000 and Backup Exec

$

I'm trying to find info on the reduplication that happens when deduplicated data is transferred off of the DR4100.

We have a TL2000 tape library that we have been using for years, and we have been compressing backup to tape jobs. We recently got a DR4100, so I've started backing up all data to it using Backup Exec 2014 and OST. I've created duplicate jobs to get backups from the 4100 to tape at the end of each month. However, I can't get the data to compress going to tape. I know that data being backed up to the 4100 can't use BE compression (software or hardware) because the 4100 is doing it's own compression, but when the data is transferred off the 4100 it is reduplicated. Why can't BE compress the data that is coming off the 4100? Is BE still seeing the data as compressed when it making the transfer?

I've opened a ticket with Symantec, but they don't have an answer and I'm not sure they completely understand the question.

Thanks.
